The remains of the Ghanaian football star Christian Atsu, who died under the rubble in Turkey’s earthquake have arrived in his hometown, Ghana, for burial, as announced yesterday by the Turkish club Hatayspor and Ghana Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

His remains arrived in Ghana on Sunday, February 19, 2023, at the Terminal 2 VIP section of the Kotoka International Airport at 7:40 pm.


A brief ceremony was performed before his body in a Turkish Airlines aircraft was removed.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia joined some family members of the deceased and the officials of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to receive the body of the late footballer.


Also present were Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Deputy Sports Minister, Evans Bobie Opoku, Ghana’s Ambassador to Turkey Francisca Ashietey-Odunton, and members of the Ghana Supporters Union.


The body of the international footballer was accompanied by his twin sister and Ghana’s Ambassador to Turkey Francisca Ashietey-Odunton.

It was a very sad moment for Ghanaians as they couldn't control their tears.

The casket fully covered with a Ghana flag was taken and conveyed to the mortuary by the military.

The Ghana international footballer had been missing since the 6 February 2023 quake that caused the collapse of his apartment in Antakya, Hatay.

After 12 days of an intense search and rescue, the lifeless body of Atsu, 31, was retrieved on Saturday morning (18th February 2023).


The twin sister of the late Christian Atsu couldn't stand the pain at the airport after bringing his lifeless brother home and left the Airport immediately

The remains have landed in Ghana waiting for arrangements for his burial.
