The Ghana Police Service has launched an investigation into a group of four robbers that attacked a bullion truck in Ablekuma Fanmilk, an Accra suburb, on Thursday.

According to authorities, the robbers shot the cop who provided an escort for the van, and the officer "subsequently passed on."

"The Police are on the lookout for a gang of four robbers who attacked a bullion van at Ablekuma Fanmilk, an Accra suburb, and shot the Police escort, who unfortunately passed away," according to a portion of the statement.

As a result, the Police Department has extended its sympathies to the officer's family.

"Our prayers and thoughts are with the family of our deceased colleague in particular and with all Police Service personnel in general."

Meanwhile, the Police have guaranteed citizens that they will not back down until the suspects are apprehended and convicted.

"We want to assure the public that the robbers will be apprehended and brought to justice."

 How it happened

The bullion van reportedly stopped at a gas station, to collect money, when the incident happened, according to sources. The robbers allegedly attacked the van at this point.

It is unclear whether they took any money. Meanwhile, the van's driver is said to have fled unharmed.

After-shooting videos that went viral on social media showed members of the public pulling the injured cop out of the car, but he died at the site.

The most recent significant bullion van attack that resulted in the killing of a young police officer occurred in June 2021 in Jamestown, an Accra neighborhood.

A group of six robbers carried it out. It was eventually revealed that among the robbers were police officers who murdered their colleagues to safeguard their identities.

Following that incident, the Ghana Police Service raised concerns about the lack of security for its employees since banks were not utilizing the proper bullion vehicles to transport money from one location to another.
