Every Home Deserves a Tanko: A Story of Real Leadership in the Volta Region |
Source: Japhet Festus Gbede
In a political landscape often riddled with broken promises and showmanship, it’s rare (almost unheard of) to witness a leader whose actions not only speak louder than their words but echo deeply in the hearts of the people.

H.E. Dr. Gabriel Kwamigah Atokple Tanko is that exception. He is not just a political figure. He is a movement, a symbol of hope, a message that real leadership still exists.
The story you’re about to read is not campaign fluff. It’s not a public relations stunt or a viral social media trend. It’s a testament to the power of empathy, selfless service, and the kind of leadership that Ghana and indeed, the world desperately needs.
For over eleven hours, a passionate party foot soldier, founder of the Social Media Army for Tanko Group, Japhet Festus Gbede wrestled with emotion before he could put pen to paper and share this story. Not due to a lack of words, but because of the overwhelming significance of what he witnessed.
This story is born out of tears, gratitude, and admiration for a man who chose humanity over headlines.
During the recently held Council of State member elections, Dr. Gabriel Tanko's campaign wasn’t just about rallies and slogans; it was a movement powered by young people, driven by a shared dream of better leadership.
Among this army of digital activists and ground-level communicators stood a man known as Minister Succeed, a respected serial caller in Ghana’s NDC circles and an unwavering grassroots communicator.
But behind the strong voice on the radio and bold messages on social media was a man living in silence and suffering. For 19 years, Succeed has been battling the cruel aftermath of a spinal cord injury from a manhole accident. Confined to his home in a quiet village, his condition invisible to the world, he never stopped being a vocal supporter of his party.
That was the request Dr. Tanko made after hearing Succeed’s persistent advocacy. With deep sincerity, he asked Japhet; the campaign coordinator to arrange a meeting with the man he had heard so much about.
Japhet hesitated not out of negligence, but from love and concern. He knew Succeed’s condition and didn’t want to expose him to political pity or exploitative optics. But Dr. Tanko didn’t relent. And when the truth of Succeed’s condition was finally shared, his response wasn’t hesitation or fear.
It was this:
“Then I will go to him myself.”
After speaking at a youth empowerment programme organized by the Atidefe Foundation in Akatsi, Dr. Tanko didn’t rest. Instead, he led a convoy of three vehicles not with pomp, but with quiet determination to Succeed’s remote village.
What followed was an act that stunned all present, and a gesture rarely seen in modern politics:
• GHS 5,000 in direct support was handed to Succeed and his family.
• A one-bedroom house was pledged, with construction to begin immediately.
• Medical assistance was promised, including long-term care.
• And instead of gifting a motorbike, which could endanger Succeed’s condition, a monthly stipend of GHS 1,000 was committed for his livelihood.
These weren’t just donations, they were lifelines. This wasn’t a photo, it was a resurrection of dignity for a forgotten hero.
In an era where many political actors chase headlines and hover in ivory towers, Dr. Tanko does the opposite:
• While others chase praise, he pursues purpose.
• Where others avoid discomfort, he drives into the heart of human pain.
• While some calculate political return, he invests in lives.
The Volta Region has seen its share of leaders. But rarely does it see someone who embodies leadership this deeply. Someone who walks the dusty roads not to be seen, but to see those who have been ignored for too long.

Dr. Gabriel Tanko has redefined what it means to be a servant of the people. His actions have sent shockwaves through not just the NDC but across all political landscapes in Ghana.
• He has shown that you don’t need presidential power to enact presidential change.
• He has proven that the truest form of campaigning is compassion.
• And he’s reminded us that real transformation happens one life at a time.
This is the leadership we’ve been longing for. Not in press releases, not in slogans, but in tangible, healing action.
To every political leader seeking relevance; learn from H.E. Dr. Gabriel Tanko.
To every young Ghanaian searching for purpose, walk with Tanko.
To every party in need of rejuvenation, stand by Tanko.
Tanko is more than a name. He is a standard. A signal. A promise.

So let it be echoed far and wide:

• Long live H.E. Gabriel Kwamigah Atokple Tanko.
• Long live the NDC.
• And long live true leadership.
Because in every home, every region, and every party; there deserves to be a Tanko.
