The Greater Accra Regional Police Command said the police have begun investigations into a daylight robbery incident that took place at Achimota on Monday, September 20, 2021.
The police said they received a distress call about the robbery incident around 3 pm and confirmed through its preliminary investigations that the robbers, two men on a motorbike, fired gunshots and made away with a cash amount of GHS29,000 stolen from a 33-year-old woman who was returning from the bank.
According to sources, the robbers who followed the woman from the Universal Merchant Bank, Abeka branch where she had withdrawn an amount of GHC29,000 and robbed her at Achimota old station around the Trinity oil station.
The woman is said to be driving in her car when the incident occurred.
A motor rider who was coming at the time was mistaken to be the police and shot at by the robbers but he, however, survived but sustained an injury on the hand.
After seeing what the robbers did to the motor rider, the woman handed over all the money to the robbers out of fear and traumatization.
A military team around the area at the time quickly rushed to the scene but met the absence of the thieves as they've already left with the money.
“The police found evidence that a gunshot had been fired at the scene of the crime, a bystander sustained gunshot wounds and was sent to the hospital and the robbers succeeded in taking away an amount of twenty-nine thousand Ghana cedis, (GHS 29,000.00) from the victim,” a police statement said.
The regional police command said the victim is currently receiving treatment.
The police urged the public to remain calm as it works to arrest the perpetrators of the crime but called for support in terms of relevant information leading to the arrest of the robbers.
“The police urge members of the general public to remain calm, and further assures its relentless commitment to ensuring the arrest of the perpetrators of this crime in the shortest possible time, as investigations into the case are ongoing.
The police further implore support from the general public to provide relevant information leading to the arrest of the robbers,” it added.
