World Cup 2022: Qatar becomes the first host nation to lose the opening game - CastinoStudiosgh

Qatar became the first host nation to lose the opening game in the history of the World Cup after falling 2-0 to Ecuador on Sunday at the Al Bayt Stadium.

Playing in their first-ever World Cup, the Maroons’ inexperience and lack of quality were displayed very early in the game as Enner Valencia scored in under three minutes a goal that was later ruled out for an offside.

16 minutes after, Valencia, the Ecuador captain, won a penalty when he was brought down by goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb and struck in beautifully a goal for the opener.

The South Americans doubled their lead in the 31 minutes as Valencia again scored the second goal with a beautiful header.

The first half saw 2-0 in favor of Ecuador with a dominating football possession as well.

In the second half, Ecuador seemed to have slowed down a bit, giving Qatar the chance to come up a bit but couldn’t get themselves a goal in the game.

Ecuador now leads Group A with three points ahead of tomorrow’s match between Senegal and the Netherlands.

This puts the host nation’s survival in the tournament at risk and a possible dropout from the group stage for Qatar is very high as the rest of the teams in Group A are very good.
