Mahama Claps Back: Cedi’s Strength Is Proof of Leadership, Not Just Policy

Former President John Dramani Mahama has fired a sharp response to former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s recent challenge regarding the Ghanaian cedi’s unexpected rebound. In a tone both resolute and composed, Mahama made it clear: Ghana’s currency resurgence is not the result of any one-off policy — it’s the product of solid, effective leadership.

Speaking during a meeting with members of the clergy on Friday, May 23, Mahama pushed back against comments made by Dr. Bawumia at a Young Executive Forum event in London. There, the former Vice President questioned the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) claim to credit for the cedi’s upward swing, daring the party to name a single policy responsible for the shift.

“If you ask the NDC to point out exactly what policy has made the cedi appreciate… they can’t name one,” Bawumia declared, crediting the currency’s stability to legacy programs like the NPP’s gold purchase initiative.

But Mahama wasn’t buying it.

“Somebody says, point to one policy you’ve implemented to make the cedi appreciate, and I say—one policy? It’s not about one policy. The answer is effective leadership,” Mahama shot back.

He emphasized that the health of an economy, particularly currency strength, stems from a blend of governance strategies — not just quick fixes. According to him, macroeconomic stability is being driven by competent leadership, fiscal responsibility, and, crucially, a resurgence in public trust.

“With effective leadership, we can turn this economy around and create a better life for our people — and that’s exactly what I’m committed to,” Mahama affirmed.

Looking ahead, Mahama pledged that the momentum built under his watch wouldn’t just be a fleeting moment. His administration, he said, is laying down a governance blueprint so strong that no matter which party takes over in the future, the progress made will stand.

“We’re setting a new standard — one that future governments can’t easily undo. Restoring faith in our democracy and economy isn’t just our goal — it’s our legacy.”

As the debate over Ghana’s economic future intensifies, one thing is clear: Mahama is not stepping back from the spotlight — he’s doubling down on leadership as the real game-changer.
