GPRTU hints on increasing transport fares again - CastinoStudiosgh

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) says they are considering another hike in public transport fares shortly.

This comes less than three weeks after the government approved a 15% increment across the board for all public transport operators in the country.

The increment was meant to cushion the public transport operators who were facing the impact of the sharp increase in fuel prices at the pumps and its accompanying economic hardships.

The National Chairman of the GPRTU, Nana Nimako Bresiamah in an interview with Metro TV monitored by CastinoStudiosgh.com on Wednesday said another increment is about to happen and urged passengers to prepare to pay more for their commutes.

“We are having a crunch meeting with our stakeholders today and expect to conclude on increasing our fares again”, the national chairman said.

Fuel sold at GHC 7.990 per litre at the time that the current price adjustment came into force on Saturday, February 26; experts have predicted that the price would top GHC 11 by the close of Wednesday, March 16.

The ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and the depreciation of the Cedi have been blamed for the recent surge in fuel prices in the country.
